A parent asked me, “What is the biggest issue you see in today’s education system?”
My answer is that there is only one issue in today’s education system—and that is us, the parents.
Hi, I’m Ratnesh from Aarohi Life Education. In this episode, I want to re-look at our responsibility towards our child’s education.
System vs. Education: The Great Misunderstanding
The reason why we are the problem is because we have misunderstood “education” as being equal to “the education system.” We started thinking that the system is the only education—not just the default, not just the most common, but the only way.
And hence, whether it fits the child or not, whether the child likes it or not, whether the child survives in it or not, we keep pushing our children year after year, city after city, into the exact same mold.
The current education system is just one system. Like any other system, it has its pluses and minuses. By itself, that’s not a problem; that’s just the way it is designed, that’s the way it is practiced, and that’s okay.
Think about it this way: there are so many other systems that exist in our lives which we don’t worry about. If we don’t like the bus, we take the train. If we don’t like the train, we take a car. But in education, there is no question of liking or not liking. For a huge chunk of the population, the only thing available is:
- Tuitions
- Extra classes
- Pressure
- More pressure
System Disabled, Not Learning Disabled
About 50% of children and their parents are very happy with the education system because the child is doing good. But what about the other 40% or 50%?
What about the children who are being shamed? The ones who are being told that they are not good enough, or who are being labeled as “learning disabled”?
Let’s be clear: Oh, come on. No, no, no, no, no. They are not learning disabled. They are system disabled.
If you are disabled by one system, you can always enable yourself in another system. I have nothing against the current system; it looks at education in its own way, and that is fine. I have everything against parents who think there is a one-size-fits-all approach.
Tailor the Education to the Child
Education does not have to be uniform. Each one of us is completely unique. And hence, we need to tailor education as per the child.
This means we need to jump out of this rigid mindset, become objective observers of our children, and say: “Ah, this is my child. This is how he or she likes to learn. This is their learning style, their talents, and their interests. And hence, this is the kind of system that will work for them.”
Let’s make the education fit the child, not force the child to fit into a system. If we can recognize this, most children can actually have a meaningful, relevant, and joyous education.
