When families first contemplate stepping off the beaten path and beginning their educational journey with home schooling or unschooling, a common fear often arises: “What if we get stuck along the way?”
Because this is an entirely new path for most parents, it is completely natural for this question to loop in your mind.
I am Aditi from Aarohi Life Education. In my experience working with hundreds of children on this self-directed learning path—as well as raising my own two children through homeschooling and unschooling—I have faced this exact moment many times.
Every time we felt stuck, or when a heavy doubt crept in about what to do next, do you know who our consultants were? Our children.
Looking Inward, Not Outward
Whenever we hit a roadblock, we didn’t look for external experts. Instead, we looked at our children. Sometimes, we simply asked them directly: “What should we do next?”
If there is one piece of advice I can offer, it is this: remind yourself that you are not on this journey alone, and neither is your child.
Homeschooling and unschooling are fundamentally a together journey.
When you hit a difficult patch, you don’t have to carry the burden of figuring it all out by yourself. You find the path forward together—by talking to each other, consulting one another, and co-creating solutions to whatever challenges or difficulties you are facing.
Powering Through as a Team
My biggest suggestion is to always involve your children in the problem-solving process. What has consistently helped us navigate the unknown is simply asking the children for their perspective.
What we have discovered is truly beautiful: when you cross these bridges and travel these paths together as a unified team, you move ahead with much more than just a solution. You move forward with:
- Greater wisdom
- Deeper learning
- Closer bonds and profound insights
The next time you feel a bit lost on your educational journey, don’t panic. Turn to your children, start a conversation, and try this collaborative approach. You might be surprised by the wisdom they bring to the table.
