And yet, you are expected to make one all-important choice – perhaps the most important choice of your life. You are expected to ‘choose’ your career path.
Imagine, making such an important choice without any exploration, exposure, or experimentation. In any other situation in life – whether it is buying a house, choosing a car, or even, dare I say, your life partner, would you go about making a choice like this?
No way!
And yet, at 20, I ‘chose’ a career in marketing and communications. I made the most important choice of my life without having any clue what life as a marketer would entail or whether it was suited to me.
What was my dream? It was to write. What was my passion? You guessed it – writing.
Today, in my 40’s, I make a living as a writer, but it took me almost 10 years as an (unhappy) marketer to turn my passion into my profession.
If there is one thing I could tell my 14, 16, 18, and 20-year-old self today, it would be this: You should live out of choices, but let your choice be the outcome of exploration, experimentation, failing, trial and error, exposure, and possibilities. Not fear, safety, and the time bombs called ‘board exams’, ‘campus placements’, and ‘job offer letters’.
If you are a youth between 14 and 21 today, you too have a choice. You can choose to make your choice an empowering one.

You will do intense and rigorous work using tools like deliberate practice, domain knowledge, portfolio creation etc., and expose yourself to real-work in those domains with real work – live projects, internships, apprenticeships etc.
You will gift yourself the chance to fully explore various domains and make a considered choice about your career path. Together with a cohort, you will co-create, co-do, and co-facilitate your own journey of self and professional development.
