During language week, as we explored different languages ranging from Kutch to Swahili. It allowed us to look at language as a medium to understand other people and their culture. We explored language in various form – we used dance, drama, music, stories, movies, people, debate and art to understand language.
Language through Stories
- We started with the story of “thirsty crow” in Martahi which encouraged on the spot story encating in “Marathi-Tamil” and “Marathi-Malayalm”. The story of “Sour grapes” in Sanskrit led to exploring some of the Sanskrit words.
- Book reading by Vijay, “Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster” was classic and we all loved the concept of “dictionopolis” – can you imagine a place where you can buy and sell words? Read the novel with Vijay for those auditory effects.
- Arthi joined on skype, she a storyteller. We had an interactive, enjoyable session with Arthi – It was lively and she was full of energy. We had all ages ( 4 to 45yrs) – and all listened to this online session. The story was simple but we were mesmerised with the flow and her energy.
