Two kids came to me on Sunday morning “lets do some kitchen science”. Hmmmmm I had planned some rest day for me, but their enthusiasm excited me. We began with discussing ‘what is kitchen science’. One of them shared “its about chemicals”. Well, the next pondering question was “what is chemical”. One of then said, “when you mix few things, it becomes chemical”. Does this means ‘cooked dal’ is also a chemical? One of them was very confident that chemicals are mix of two things, other one was pondering what all is mixed and becomes chemicals – does anyone wants to teach them what is chemical?

We moved to exploring different cooking processes – took few potatoes and cooked them in different ways – boiled, deep fry, roast, and the last one was in ‘chemical’ (chemical was made up of oil and lemon and water and lemon…and boiled)….we weighed each potato before and after each cooking process…..roasted potato was 40 gm before roasting and 20 gms after roasting??? Who did the magic – potato or roasting?

Eight potatoes were ‘wasted’, kids declared ‘none of the potatoes edible due to ‘chemical’ mixed in the cooking process’. Then what did we get out of this exploration? Are you pondering…..
