Learning by Doing and Experimenting

The story of Movement

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, I, the Body and Kinesthetic intelligence, was much sought after. Warriors depended on me; craftsmen used me to create both articles of utility and beauty; dancers and dramatists added depth to culture; sport was the primary pastime, and many professions used hands dexterously to achieve and to perform. A lot of education was about developing my presence in each child. I was valued because people believed in the magic of hands and body. I was popular because people could create and perform with me.

Story of my Growing

When he came we asked “what are your interests”

He asked “what does it mean?”

We asked “what you like doing?”

He said, “Matlab (meaning)?”

We asked “what you do at home?”

He smiled “watch TV and play video games on my tab”

We got hopeful and asked and …

He said “that’s all”.

We asked to know more “and in school?”

With a smile again he said “bunk classes and play cricket with my notebook in the bathroom”

They do!

They both love Video Games

They both understand technology

They both have not gone through any classroom teaching of computer programming

But they both are our “System Admin” - repair laptops, setup internet for our campus and … solving all our technology problems.

All they do is DO!

Learning in Doing

During my trip to Andaman, I overheard one of the Scuba Diving instructor telling a participant “You are not doing too good with diving, but you don't do good just by talking about it, you do good by DOING, so just go and DO”.

Just one idea “Gift a Dosa to others in lunch today” was enough to experience “Care for others, doing, trying, experimenting, thinking, feeling grateful”.

Gratitude - “I have gratitude for all mothers and akkas and facilitators who make food for us, just after making one dosa, the heat of the gas was troubling me”.

The Magic of Making Rasam

Love of Rasam

But how to make it was a question

I have never made

Never thought of making it

Well, the journey began with finding out recipe

Then collecting the ingredients

And then making

And guess what - it took three hours to make this Rasam, which Amma and Akkas makes in 15 minutes.

But it's not about the time I took

But the process I went through

The struggle I went through

The effost I made

Open Learning

"I know nothing more inspiring than that of making discovering for oneself"
George Washington

The myth of learning is simple to state and prove. The myth says that only when we learn, do we learn. What it means is that unless there is a conscious and methodical method to learning, learning cannot happen. It is only when we are taught (in a systematic, structured way) that we will learn.

Learning in Multi forms

Multi session taken by kids of various ages - It was not about us knowing and learning from them - but it was all about various exposures and various opportunities to look at learning.

Process or Learning

Since we have no curriculum at Aarohi, the need of learning arises from living, interests and exposures - Painting, Baking, Fractions, Film making, Football, Craft, Crochet, Stone Collection, Stitching, Market visit, Cooking, Film making, Carpentry, repairs, playing drums, singing, dancing, Mud work … The list is simple from simple needs of life.
