As a part of “Aarohi volunteers”, to create opportunities to work at different places during holidays we spent two days at Sandesh. The experience was unique. Sandesh is a community for young people with intellectual disability, where along with the assistance of staff, they make their home. Sandesh helps them to grow to their full potential, with regular training, ample love and care.

We worked on painting Diyas, making packaging boxes, pouring wax, making Papier MAche bowls. The experience was not about gaining any skills but experiencing an environment where we could make friends with young people with intellectual disability. This aspect otherwise missing from our society not available around us.

One girl was laughing every time she was throwing ball. One wanted to talk and talk repeated things. One wanted to be read non stop and repeat some words from what was read. One was very apprehensive to serve us juice, one was not happy to leave washing plates, another one wanted to dance, one would get fits in case of happiness or sadness. One wanted to paint with his head down and speak a word or two in between and eat food in the last. One did not want to leave her chair and sit whole day long.

I do not know if they are mentally disabled or we are incapable to understand them. During these two days, being with them, working with them helped to make friends with them. As a bonus, it was nice to experience the whole process of making of a product – from raw material to packing including labelling etc. Enjoyed all two days @ Sandesh.
