For me geography was restricted to science of climate and seasons. Further earth science was only bounded within formation of rocks and its types. Recently went for a trip to Lucknow with Aarohi kids to explore rocks……we began with thought of exploring rocks and realized how many things are connected. We found the treasure of ‘earth science’.

The journey began with one constraint – ‘talk, read, visits, all related to earth science ONLY’. I was not sure how it will go, but the constraint led to all of us making efforts to look for various resources related to earth science. We all carried books, ebooks and videos with us for the train journey related to earth science.

We touched upon many topics, made games, talked and enjoyed them in different ways. What is inside earth, what is outside, ozone layer, etc was talked about in detail and we were pondering over UV rays ……. elements like carbon were imagined and acted on the spot, quizzes and jokes were made on volcanoes, Wegner’s theory of continental drift was discussed in detail. Different videos on what is inside the earth made us very comfortable with Mantle, outer core and inner core becoming part of our casual talks. We wondered about the cycle of rocks, while radioactive dating was confusing and confusion led to exploring what is carbon?

Meeting different scientist made us very comfortable with Fossils, rocks and various stones. Visit to GSI was very informative and involving. Looking at rocks through microscope was very fascinating – it looked like painting.

Visit to science museum further ignited our quest for science. One child shared “I am not able to think anything beyond Carbon, no other thoughts are coming in my mind even after so many days of the trip”.

Session on “how rail engine works” with a railway officer made our train journey exploratory, we were looking for whole electrical layout and tracks placements.

Our trip to Lucknow was a memorable trip. We received goodwill of friends and their love. We are thankful to them for their generosity.

Here are some thoughts of kids

  • In fossils I enjoyed seeing them and they were different and it was a new topic for me. When uncle was explaining about leaf print I was wondering If I was old, I could have been to see that. At factory I was really amazed to see that type of factory, polishing, cutting and grinding the stone. When I started making my own stone, I imagined how it will come out, but it did not come out that way. It came out different but I liked it. When I was shaping it, and observing I was imagining how difficult it will be.
  • And I learned how to polish quartz stone and make it smooth. And I also understood how electric engines work. And I understood how a submarine goes down and comes up. Now because of understanding that every second we break the ozone layer I want to try experiments. And I never new that a tree is also a fossil and now even I want to find fossils. I never new that India had its own dinosaurs.
  • On Monday a very different train journey begin where I was trying my best so that I was talking /reading /listening etc about geology and geography the main thing I took from this journey is that all the topics no matter how boring they are there is so many things in that topic that 1 or the other will attract you and you will enjoy it, the book’s I was reading in the trip were something I will not choose to read if there was no constraint but since I started reading I am enjoying. BSIP I had a lot of fun and new and interesting things happened but I was confused about what carbon and radio active carbon dating means but after playing around with it imaging etc and reading about it in an encyclopedia think I am more clear and satisfied, and I think humans have a great mind and will never stop doing more research on the past and future will not stop!!! Going to the stone factory was a different experience because I could do what I want no factory the owner has been OK with us doing touching and doing things that made this a great experience for me. The movie we saw about Antarctica was different than other movies I generally see. Imambara was the same as some other places we have been to but I the flowing light concept was new to me.
  • It was a different experience with a different constraints of only talking about geology, geography and earth science. Cutting grinding and polishing at the factory was very fascinating and interesting to work. When we went to B.S.I.P I was wondering how would they have come up that stone and the imprint on the stone is of a leaf. It was a very pondering question that HOW did the people know that this is like this and that is like that. I made a carbon world which is made with my imagination. In science city there were many different things to know about and the movie on Antarctica was knowledgeable for the current situation of Antarctica. In G.S.I it was stimulating to know about humans before, dinosaurs and kinds of fossils. In imambara I thought in bhool bhuliya we can go without guide but once we went in, it was all dark and then I realized that It may not be possible without guide. We also learned about train engines.
